You may be familiar with Best Buy's warranty by Geek Squad. Cindy Yu was. She paid $250 for a five year Geek Squad warranty to cover the new Frigidaire washer and dry set she bought from Best Buy in March of 2017. She felt covered because the warranty said, "If we can't fix it we'll replace it."

The washing machines on the market today can do more than simply clean clothes. Some come with Wi-Fi capabilities, making it possible to start and monitor cycles from a smartphone. When shopping for a new washer, you may also notice other advanced features, from a dedicated cycle for removing allergens in clothing to a built-in faucet for pre-treating soiled laundry.

While these options are designed to make washing clothes more convenient, they give shoppers more to think about. To help with the decision-making process, we rounded up our top-rated picks so you can find one that best serves your lifestyle.

The LG WM3600H front-load washer earns the No. 3 spot in both our Best Washing Machines of 2023 and Best Front-Load Washing Machines of 2023 ratings. Additionally, this model, which costs $1,049, places at No. 2 in our evaluation of the Best Cheap Washing Machines of 2023.

The LG WKGX201H Front-Load WashTower is the only washer-dryer combo in our Best Washing Machines of 2023 rating. This compact model offers both a 4.5-cubic-foot front-load washer and a 7.4-cubic-foot gas dryer in a single unit, making it a suitable choice for those with limited space.

The LG WM8100HVA front-loader ties at No. 6 in both our Best Washing Machines of 2023 and Best Front-Load Washing Machines of 2023 ratings. Along with the LG 5.2-Cubic-Foot WM9000HVA, which has the same drum size, this model offers the most generous capacity of all the washers in our ratings, making it an ideal pick for larger families.

Additionally, this top-loader offers a Stain Removal Guide, a wash option with a targeted approach to removing stains. Simply select the type of stain you want to remove, whether it be grass, dirt, blood, or wine, and the machine will adjust its cleaning technique to best combat it.

Still, even with impellers, top-load washing machines are not as energy efficient as front-loaders. EnergyStar.gov says front-load washers are about 25% more energy- and water-efficient than top-loaders with an impeller. They also still clean better and more gently, so your clothes will last longer. Both of the top-load washers in our rating are Energy Star-rated machines.

There are myriad things to consider when researching a washing machine, but the best starting point is probably your budget. Remember to include any required installation accessories like hoses and stacking kits, as well as other add-ons like pedestals or risers. If you choose to have the machine professionally installed, consider the price of installation.

The next step is to measure the space where your machine, or set of machines, will be placed. Some washers are mega-capacity behemoths that need plenty of room, while others are the more traditional closet depth that should fit in any standard laundry nook. Include room behind the washer for hoses in your measurements.

The models in our evaluation range in capacity, with 4.5 cubic feet being the lowest and 5.2 cubic feet being the largest. Keep in mind, a 4.5-cubic-foot washer is still considered to have a large capacity, and it can fit bulky items like king-size bedding.

This is especially important for front-load washers because they are prone to mold and mildew build-up on the door seal and gasket. For front-load washers, you should occasionally run a towel along the gaskets around the door to prevent mildew and associated odors.

It depends how risk-averse you are. I didn't buy such an agreement, on the grounds that most problems would manifest themselves within the warranty period, and in my case it was a good decision, but if you are risk-averse then it might give you peace of mind. After all, one serious repair on these machines can be well over $100.BTW, your credit card might double the factory warranty. - DR

I used to stay away from extended warranties, figured they were a complete rip off. But then I started purchasing them on "big ticket" or expensive items, and it's paid off several times on different items, actually. I had so much trouble with my Kenmore dryer, when I ditched it for my LG dryer from Best Buy I got the 5 year extended warranty. The LG dryer is 3 years old this summer and have had a service man out twice in the past 6 months due to no heat in the dryer. Each time the BB service tech put $68 as the charge for the service call on his paperwork (I suspect had it not been under extended warranty, but rather paid by me, that charge would have been higher. Probably would have paid that much for him to show up at the door). According to the "Lemon Law" clause of the policy, after a 3rd repair I'm entitled to a full refund and/or replacement.

well I have bought it on a few items over the years, like my JVC 32" TV, a Maytag dishwasher, and my old Ge washer and dryer. I also have it on the frigidaire front loader I got from best buy last year. The TV is now 8 years old and out of warranty never needing any service yet, the dishwasher at my old house was serviced once under warranty, the clothes washer started to go a year after the warranty was up and the dryer is still going with no service calls. on some items its not worth it but I have found with appliances its a gamle but it buys some peace of mind to know that repairs are covered for a few years. on an item like a front load washer I'd buy it they cost to much to replace should they break down and are new technology here in the states. Plus a service call costs 2/3 of the warranty's price just for them to show up so it will likey pay for its self if and when the first service call is made.

For retailers, extended warranty probably represents a very important and lucrative element of their business activity. The law of the averages means they can count on the expiration of these warranties most of the time, resulting in pure profit.

I generally do not pay for an extended warranty if the product I am buying has a brand reputation and a decent manufacturer's warranty. There was just one time I bought an extended warranty because the item, an LCD TV, was on big sale (door-busting after-Thanksgiving sale at Best Buy, sold out in minutes) and I was not sure of the brand. The total cost including the extended warranty was still much less than their regular price, so I figured it was well worth it. 041b061a72
